Why Sitting Too Much Is Harmful To Your Back

What You Can Do to Avoid Injury and Relieve Pain
 

In today's world of technology-based employment, working long hours at a computer is commonplace. While sitting seems harmless and more comfortable than standing, doing so can cause or exacerbate back pain.

Studies show that a number of things happen to your body when you sit for long periods of time. Things happen that change the way your spine and muscles operate. Remaining seated for hours on end can weaken and damage the spine, neck, and muscles causing discomfort.

To avoid permanent damage to your back, it is recommended that you take some preventative steps:

Sit Up Straight

  • Choosing a suitable chair to sit in as you work is important. It is recommended that people who sit at a desk or a computer for extended periods require the support and functionality of an ergonomic office chair. These chairs are fully adjustable to support the spine and relieve stress on your body.

Stretch Your Spine

  • You can physically condition yourself by doing stretches to strengthen your spine and reduce the occurrence of injury. For every thirty minutes spent in a static position, you should stretch for at least one minute.

Hit the Gym

  • Regularly working out at a gym or even in your home can improve your health in many ways. Exercises including situps, pushups, running on a treadmill, and using a stationery bike contribute to your core strength. Your whole body can benefit from a good workout on a regular basis.

Get a New Mattress

  • If you have a squishy old mattress that doesn't provide much support you could be doing irreparable damage to your spine. Make your bed a place of health and restoration by replacing your mattress with a firmer, more supportive sleeper.

Eat a Healthful Diet

  • Adjust your diet to include foods that reduce inflammation and improve circulation. Inflammation sends pain signals to the brain and poor circulation can contribute to an unhealthy back. Nuts and seeds, proteins, soy, fruits and vegetables, and fish are good foods for a good back.

See Your Chiropractor

  • A chiropractor can perform adjustments on your back to help maintain strength and flexibility. While seated, the muscles normally used to support your back don't get a chance to contract and work to stabilize the spine so they shorten and become useless. Chiropractic care can prevent that.

Adjust Your Car Seat

  • Another thing you can do to alleviate stress on your back is something that is often overlooked. Adjusting the driver's seat in your car to maximize support and comfort while commuting can do wonders for the overall health of your back.

It's never too late to improve the health of your back. If the damage has already been done that doesn't mean it can't be reversed. All of the things discussed here can prevent and help repair the damage done while sitting for extended periods of time.Take care of your back and your back will take care of you.
