Can Your Chiropractor Treat a Bulging Cervical Disc?

If you've been to our Pacific Beach Chiropractic office you may know that Bulging cervical discs are quite literally a pain in the neck. While some turn to self-medication to treat their spinal issues, it usually isn’t enough. Luckily, your chiropractor can help treat a bulging cervical discs soon as it is noticed.

What is Bulging Cervical Disc?

A bulging disc in the neck occurs when a disk in the upper portion of the spine is weakened and becomes damaged. The vertebrae surrounding a weak disc put too much pressure on it.  This extra pressure is too much for the disc to handle, and it pushes outward or “bulges” away from the rest of the spine.

Causes and Symptoms of Bulging Cervical Discs

Bulging discs in the neck typically develop as a result of continuous motion slowly deteriorating the joints between the vertebrae and wearing down the discs.  This is very common in the vertebrae in the neck, because the vertebrae and discs here have to support the weight of the head and allow the head and neck to pivot in all directions. This strain causes cervical discs to wear down over time. Bulging cervical discs can also be caused by injury or trauma, but the incidence is much lower.

Some bulging discs are hardly noticed, while others cause severe pain. If the bulging cervical disc is straining the spinal cord or a nearby nerve root, uncomfortable symptoms of nerve damage can be experienced. Symptoms of compressed nerve roots can vary in severity, and include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling sensation
  • Painful “pins and needles” sensation

These sensations are typically localized in the neck and shoulders, but the chest, arms and hands can also be affected.

How are Cervical Bulging Discs treated?

Home Remedies

Many people turn to self-medication to treat minor cases of bulging cervical discs. Pain medications and simple at-home exercises to stretch the muscles are great ways to alleviate the pain until you can see a chiropractor, but you will want to make an appointment as soon as possible to avoid further complications.

Surgical Treatment

If left untreated, bulging cervical discs can require surgery. While modern technology has made these surgeries as risk free as possible, this should be seen as a last resort treatment.

Chiropractic care for Bulging Cervical Disc

Through gentle manual manipulation, chiropractic care helps reduce the joint dysfunction that is adding to the pain. This mobilization helps to reduce inflammation and keeps bodily fluids flowing naturally to the damaged disc. Adjustments should be avoided in most cases as they can make the pain worse, and may also worsen any neurological damage.

If you or a loved one have any of these symptoms and believe you have a bulging cervical disc, it is important to contact your chiropractor right away.  At Personalized Chiropractic here in San Diego, we take a holistic approach to bulging cervical discs that is both gentle and effective. Using gentle massage techniques and mobility exercises is the best way to get you on the track to healing.
