Tips to Staying Healthy in 2016
Author: Amanda Fuller
Want to stay healthy in the new year? Start 2016 off right by following these simple steps.
- Stay Hydrated
Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to function properly. Water makes up more than half your body weight, but much of it is lost when you use the bathroom, sweat and even when you breathe. It’s important to consume at least 6-8, 8 ounce glasses of water a day.
- Keep Stress Low
It’s no secret that stress can weaken one’s immune system. These pressures we put on our bodies can weaken the immune response which makes it easier for us to come down with a cold, the flu or any other infection. Have you ever tried meditation? Try taking as little as 30 minutes out of your day to focus on deep breathing. It can really diminish the effects of stress.
- Maintain a Healthy Diet
Eating foods high in sugar and not eating enough fruit and vegetables can negatively affect your immune system. It can also lead to obesity, which makes you even more susceptible to disease. A healthy diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables, proteins and whole grains.
- Exercise Regularly
Did you know that exercising 20 minutes a day could help improve your immune system? Studies have shown that exercising regularly enhances your body’s ability to create antibodies and T-cells, which are the white blood cells that fight off infection. Exercising regularly will improve your overall health, and you’ll feel great!
- Sleep Well
Sleep is not only important to healthy brain function and your emotional well being, but your immune system relies on sleep to stay healthy. Your immune system fights off foreign and harmful substances. When your body is lacking sleep, your immune system may not be able to fight off these infections as well. Getting 6-8 hours of sleep each night is ideal for most adults.
- Wash Your Hands
Of course keeping your hands clean helps prevent some infections. However, going overboard with hand sanitizers and cleaning products, may actually be counterproductive. Exposing yourself to some bacteria every now and then allows your immune system to stay active and ready to fight off its next attacker. Avoiding exposure altogether weakens the immune system. In other words, it’s great to keep yourself clean, but don’t go crazy!
- Get Adjusted
It’s no secret that the nervous system and immune system work together in order for the body to adapt and heal appropriately. Subluxations can be very stressful to the body, which can then lead to an altered immune response. Chiropractic adjustments can help boost the the coordinated responses of the nervous system and immune system. Getting adjusted regularly is important to your health, not only when you’re feeling pain, but as a preventative measure as well!
