Treat Scoliosis with Chiropractic Care: It’s possible!
Scoliosis affects millions of people in the United States alone. These are big numbers for a disorder we know little about. The exact cause of scoliosis is unknown, and surgical treatment options are not for everyone. New evidence is suggesting that natural scoliosis treatment options such as chiropractic care are the safest way to easing symptoms.
Scoliosis is a word used to describe any abnormal curvature of the spine. When viewed from the back, the spine is normally straight. When scoliosis is present, the back curves to the right, to the left, or has an “S-shaped” appearance.
This abnormal curve can cause many symptoms in the body if left untreated. Signs to look for include:
- Uneven hips
- One shoulder which appears more prominent than the other
- Uneven waistline
- Entire body leaning to one side
- Head not directly above the pelvis
If left untreated, the spine may actually rotate, causing the ribs on one side of the body to stick out more than the other. People with progressed scoliosis may become self-conscious, as their body’s physical appearance is altered significantly. Scoliosis is also associated with back pain in many cases; making treatment important for a great number of people.
Standard treatment options
Scoliosis treatment varies largely. Depending on the extent of the curvature, the location of the curvature, the possibility of progression, and if the person has reached spinal maturity, scoliosis treatment can include a mix of observation, braces, or surgery.
Doctors will simply observe children who have scoliosis which is very mild, and may not require treatment, should the scoliosis progress, bracing may be required. Braces are effective if children have yet to receive skeletal maturity; to prevent the curve from progressing. Surgery is the most drastic standard scoliosis treatment.
In children, surgery has the primary goals of diminishing spinal deformity and stopping the progression of the spinal curve. In adults, surgery is often only recommended for people with a curve of 50% or more.
Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis
Recent studies have explored a possible link between the spinal fluid and scoliosis in the body. Researchers noted a link between the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the likelihood of developing scoliosis. According to this research, irregularities in CSF flow may be an underlying cause of scoliosis. The research also noted that noninvasive therapies may help prevent severe scoliosis.
Another promising study followed scoliosis patients who completed an exercise-based chiropractic program. Selected patients went through 6 months of chiropractic rehab therapy. The retrospective results showed the effect of the treatment 24 months after it was completed. According to the study, patients who underwent therapy demonstrated “sustained radiographic, self-rated, and physiologic benefits after treatment ceased”. All patients involved reported improvements in pain, Cobb angle, and disability both immediately following treatment and 2 years after the treatment concluded. These results show great promise in treating or preventing scoliosis with chiropractic care.
