Do you suffer from “Text Neck”?
Text Neck is a rising problem being seen more and more in Chiropractic offices across the nation. Coined in recent years, “text neck” refers to a change in the normal curve of your neck resulting in a wide range of symptoms such as; headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, pain in between the shoulder blades, hand and arm numbness, and even difficulty sleeping and reduced lung capacity. The culprit? Increased use of digital handheld phones and devices. The forward head posture created when looking down during texting or working on a tablet creates a significant increase in stress on the neck and mid-back musculature, vertebra, joints, discs, and nerves. Prolonged and repetitive use can cause lasting changes to the neck and upper spine with long term, lasting damage. Which, if left un-treated will likely lead to an early onset of osteoarthritis in the neck.
“The number of younger people that have lost or reversed the curvature of their spine, without suffering from a major accident in their lives is astounding,” said Dr. Ryan Curda when asked about the impact he’s seen on patient’s health that he has treated. “The best way to avoid suffering from this is to be posturally aware and keep your phone or other device at eye level when you use it. Take breaks, stretch, and counteract the forward stresses with simple to do exercises.” If you suspect that you or your child is suffering from numbness or pain caused by a change in their neck due to long term electronic device use, an X-ray is imperative to determine the extent.
