The Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet consists of high fat, moderate protein and very low carbohydrate intake. It has gotten a lot of attention recently, especially for people looking to lose weight. Yet the benefits of the ketogenic diet do not stop at weight loss. ‘Keto dieting’ seems to be useful for a number of reasons, and some of them are quite surprising. Here  are some of the most notable benefits of diving in to the keto diet.

Medical benefits of disease prevention

A ketogenic diet may even prevent or reverse cancer cell progress. A recent study posted to Redox Biology noted that the ketogenic diet began as a treatment for epilepsy, and that the diet appears to have use in the treatment of cancer cells. Researchers found that tumor sizes decreased more when the keto diet was followed alongside standard radiation therapy. This may be because cancer cells are so dependent on sugar.

Fat loss

Obesity is a strong risk factor for many disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Luckily, a ketogenic diet can help reduce weight easily. Putting the body in the state of ketosis forces the body to burn fat for energy instead of sugar. Many people say that once the initial diet hunger pangs are gone, they pass easily into the ketogenic diet and start losing weight.

Increased energy

There is a reason athletes who are training for endurance exercises are switching to a ketogenic diet – it works. Eating a high fat and low carb diet actually appears to boost the physical performance of the body. Athletes report more stamina and higher endurance, but this is great news for the rest of us as well. This can mean waking up feeling rested, taking less coffee breaks throughout the day, and getting rid of that mid-day crash.

Mental clarity

Fat is amazing for the brain. It provides energy, helps protect brain cells, and eases certain brain conditions. The brain also operates better when it is consuming fat rather than sugar. This means that the keto diet can help the brain be more efficient. It is no wonderthat mental clarity and enhanced mental ability are the first things many people notice when they start the diet.

Decreased insulin sensitivity

Insulin is a hormone humans use to digest glucose in the body. The more glucose in the diet, the more insulin is used. Over time, or with a high-carb diet, this can lead to insulin sensitivity. The body then requires more and more insulin for the same amount of glucose. The keto diet may actually reverse this. It influences the liver to work more efficiently and reduces the insulin in the body. This can actually decrease insulin sensitivity in many people.

Using exogenous ketones as a dietary supplement

Many people also take exogenous ketones as a dietary supplement to promote ketosis in addition to the whole food diet to help initiate the switch of their body from burning glucose for fuel to body fat for energy. Exogenous ketones may help the body search for more fat to use as fuel, and therefore help burn fat, increase energy levels and mental clarity, and reduce weight. Additionally if you do wish to “carb cycle” or have a “cheat” meal the exogenous ketones can bump your body back into ketosis much faster than diet alone.
